The Orthopaedic Research and Education Foundation (OREF) and the National Stem Cell Foundation (NSCF) announced today that a research grant of $800,000 has been awarded to Christopher L. Mendias, PhD, and co-principal investigator Scott Rodeo, MD, both of Hospital for Special Surgery in New York. Drs. Mendias and Rodeo received the OREF Clinical Research Grant in Cellular Therapy in Honor of James Urbaniak, MD. The study, SVFC Therapy to Improve Rotator Cuff Tears: A Phase II Clinical Trial, seeks to determine if autologous stem cell therapy will enhance the regeneration of musculoskeletal tissue and improve surgical outcomes for patients with chronic rotator cuff tears. This is the second collaboration between OREF and NSCF to advance promising research in adult stem cell therapies, expected to play a key role in the future of orthopaedic medicine.
