In Memory: James R. Urbaniak, MD
Former OREF Board President and longtime donor James R. Urbaniak, MD, passed away July 18, 2026.
Dr. Urbaniak's relationship with OREF began through a chance introduction from his friend and Duke colleague, Frank H. Bassett III, MD, who connected him with OREF fundraiser Tom Coffman. That introduction left a lasting impression. In 1996, Dr. Urbaniak and his wife, Muff, made a major contribution to the OREF Endowment and became members of the OREF Shands Circle recognition society — the beginning of nearly three decades of generous, thoughtful giving.
Dr. and Mrs. Urbaniak made their philanthropic decisions together, always seeking to understand exactly where their contributions would go. Beyond their major gifts, the couple gave annually and were Order of Merit donors for 34 years — a remarkable record of sustained commitment to the field Dr. Urbaniak loved.
“My interests are in research, and you can't do research without funding. Orthopaedics is the most dynamic and creative specialty in all of medicine… but you need money for this. So, I saw the need for OREF.”
Dr. Urbaniak's giving culminated in his eponymous OREF Mentor Campaign, established to honor his commitment to training future generations of researchers and to advance work in regenerative medicine — a field he believed represented the future of orthopaedics. The campaign raised more than $1 million, including $15,000 the Urbaniaks contributed personally to the OREF Research Fund. In 2018, that campaign funded an $800,000 grant — OREF's largest at the time — supporting research into stem cell therapies for musculoskeletal tissue regeneration.
DECADES OF SERVICE TO OREF
Dr. Urbaniak's generosity was matched by his hands-on service. Over the course of his long relationship with the Foundation, he served as a Trustee and as Board Chairman, lending his expertise and leadership to guide OREF's mission. He often pointed to the success of OREF's Career Development Grant program — whose recipients secure federal funding at far higher rates than their peers — as proof of the Foundation's impact, something he witnessed firsthand among researchers in his own Duke laboratory.
In recognition of his extraordinary history with the Foundation — as donor, volunteer, Trustee, Board Chairman, and Mentor Campaign honoree — OREF's Board of Trustees selected Dr. Urbaniak for the 2023 OREF Lifetime Service Award.
“It shows you where my heart is. Both my wife and I are for charity, all different kinds, and different levels. But orthopaedics has been my life... OREF to me is the heart of orthopaedics. My belief is that OREF has benefited more patients and aided more physicians than any other orthopaedic organization.”
HIS LEGACY
Dr. Urbaniak's belief in the power of research — and in the people who carry it forward — shaped his life's work, both in the operating room and beyond it. Through his generosity and leadership, he helped ensure that the next generation of orthopaedic surgeons and researchers would have the funding, mentorship, and support to pursue their own breakthroughs.
