Richard J. Haynes, M.D. Receives 2006 Tipton Award for Outstanding Orthopaedic Leadership

In recognition of his outstanding leadership in the orthopaedic specialty, Richard J. Haynes, MD was presented on March 24, 2006 with the inaugural William W. Tipton Jr., MD Leadership Award. Honoring the ideals of Dr. Tipton’s career, the Tipton award established by friends and colleagues in conjunction with the Orthopaedic Research and Education Foundation (OREF) is bestowed to a recognized leader among peers who is committed to the growth of orthopaedics.

The prestigious award was presented to Dr. Haynes at the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons’ (AAOS) Annual Meeting at McCormick Place.

Throughout his more than 30-year career in orthopaedics, Dr. Haynes held various positions that epitomize his innate skills as a leader and educator. He has been actively involved teaching residents at eight orthopaedic residency programs, and is dedicated to AAOS’ Diversity Committee and Leadership Fellows Program.  He is a past president of the Western Orthopedic Association and the president-elect of the American Board of Orthopedic Surgeons. Dr. Haynes has also won numerous awards and honors, including the 2005 Distinguished Service Award from the American Academy of Pediatrics Section on Orthopedics.

“I believe leadership is an extremely important aspect of my job and in furthering the orthopaedic profession,” explained Dr. Haynes. “By collaborating, building bridges and networking among peers, we can enhance our work and better serve our patients.”

Currently chief-of-staff at Shriners Hospital for Children in Houston, Dr. Haynes is a graduate of the University of California Medical School, San Francisco. After earning his medical degree, Dr. Haynes began his medical career in the U.S. Army. He completed his internship at Tripler Army Medical Center in Honolulu, his residency at Walson Army Hospital in Fort Dix, N.J. and Letterman Army Medical Center at the Presidio in San Francisco. Dr. Haynes then trained in pediatric orthopaedics at Shriners Hospital in San Francisco. During his tenure in the U.S. Medical Corps, Dr. Haynes rose to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel, and served another decade in the U.S. Army Reserves, retiring from duty as Colonel. After leaving the military, Dr. Haynes pursued private practice followed by academic leadership serving as director of pediatric orthopaedic surgery at the Phoenix Orthopaedic Residency Training Program in Arizona.

“In politics and academics Dr. Haynes has always worked within groups for the greater good. His skills at conflict resolution and maintaining focus on goals are remarkable,” stated Dr. Haynes’ former mentee, Ellen M. Raney, MD, chief-of-staff at the Shriners Hospital for Children in Honolulu.  “I have always been impressed at the amount of public credit he gives to junior faculty, residents and even students for their contribution to research projects. He has consistently promoted cultural sensitivity, patient care and diversity among our ranks.”

Described as someone who empowers his staff, inspires patients and enhances the profession, Dr. Haynes models the ideals set forth by William W. Tipton Jr., MD.  An orthopaedic surgeon, educator, former chair of AAOS’ Board of Councilors, and highly regarded AAOS executive vice president and chief executive officer who led the organization for approximately 10 years, Dr. Tipton exemplified leadership, passion and dedication to fellow orthopaedic surgeons, staff and the entire medical community.

This award will commemorate Dr. Tipton and encourage others to continue his legacy. Dr. Haynes has donated the financial portion of the award to the Thomas E. Cain M.D. Educational Trust Fund which supports Medical Student summer research projects at the Shriners Hospital in Houston.
