OREF/American Geriatrics Society (AGS) Partnership Program—Applications closed

This program provides supplemental funding for the National Institute on Aging's (NIA) GEMSSTAR award. The goal of this early career grant is to help new investigators establish a research track record in the field of geriatrics research, while nurturing their academic careers. The GEMSSTAR grant provides funding of up to $100,000 in direct costs over two years, and requires matching funds. Junior faculty are encouraged to apply. This R03 grant is administered by the National Institutes of Aging, which recently posted a request for applications, including submission guidelines and deadline information at: http://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/rfa-files/RFA-AG-13-006.html. OREF/ASES/Rockwood Clinical Research Grant in Shoulder CareApplications closed

Members of the American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons (ASES) are invited to apply for a clinical research grant in the field of shoulder care. PhDs and DVMs are eligible to apply if they are affiliated with an orthopaedic department and working with an orthopaedic surgeon who is the principal or co-principal investigator. This grant is made available through an endowment fund established with a generous contribution from the family of Charles A. Rockwood Jr., MD. Clinical relevance must be clearly noted in the abstract under specific aims, and be obvious from the title and the study design. A peer review committee, which will include representatives from OREF and ASES, will select the grant recipient. One grant of $50,000 for one year will be awarded for Project Year 2013.

OREF Career Development GrantApplications closed

Career Development grants encourage a commitment to clinically relevant scientific research in orthopaedic surgery. Candidates must demonstrate a sustained interest in research and excellence in their training. PhDs and DVMs are eligible if they are affiliated with an orthopaedic department. Letters of support must offer evidence of the candidate’s potential to develop as an investigator. One grant of up to $225,000 over three years, subject to annual review, is offered for Project Year 2013.

OREF Clinical Research Award—Applications closed

This award recognizes outstanding clinical research related to musculoskeletal disease or injury. Manuscripts should be original and the lead author must be a member (or candidate member) of AAOS, ORS, Canadian Orthopaedic Association, or Canadian Orthopaedic Research Society. One award of $20,000 is offered. Manuscripts should represent a large body of cohesive scientific work generally reflecting years of investigation. If the submission reflects a single project, it should be of high significance and impact. OREF/Current Concepts in Joint Replacement Clinical Practice Award—Applications due January 18, 2013 for the Spring 2013 award

OREF and the Current Concepts in Joint Replacement (CCJR) meetings, through the auspices of the Current Concepts Institute (CCI), invite manuscripts for the seventh and eighth OREF Clinical Practice Award. Manuscripts must address completed investigations focusing on health care policy, clinical outcomes, or translational research that has immediate clinical impact in the diagnosis and treatment of patients. An honorarium of $2,000 will be given in recognition of scientific achievement and clinical relevance. All orthopaedic surgeons in clinical fellowship training programs or who have completed residency and/or fellowship training and are in private practice are eligible.

The primary author Award Recipient will be given the opportunity to present his/her paper at the next CCJR meeting, which attracts an international orthopaedic surgeon audience. The recipient of the Spring 2013 award will join a faculty comprising orthopaedic thought leaders in Las Vegas, May 12-13, 2013. As a faculty member, the Award Recipient’s travel expenses will be reimbursed by CCI, and her/his presentation will be included in the meeting’s enduring materials and considered for publication.

OREF will administer the selection process for this award. Submissions will be blinded, and an independent selection committee convened by OREF will determine the Award Recipient.

OREF/Goldberg Research Grant in ArthritisApplications closed

New orthopaedic investigators are invited to apply for a research grant in the field of arthritis. The principal or co-principal investigator must be an orthopaedic surgeon. PhDs and DVMs are eligible to apply if they are affiliated with an orthopaedic department. This grant is made available through an endowment fund established with a generous contribution from Victor M. Goldberg MD. Applications for projects of a clinical or basic science nature will be accepted. Applications that address issues related to the treatment of arthritis with an emphasis on Arthroplasty also will be considered. One grant of $50,000 for one year is available for Project Year 2013.

OREF/MSTS Clinical Research Grant in Orthopaedic Oncology—Applications closed

This grant encourages new and established investigators by providing seed and start-up funding for promising research projects that improve clinical outcomes for patients. Clinical relevance must be clearly noted in the abstract and specific aims, and be obvious from the title and study design. Budgets must be justified, and projects should be prospective, multi-institutional if necessary to meet accrual goals, and if so open to institutions of MSTS members. The principal or co-principal investigator must be an MSTS member in good standing.  Pilot studies should identify specific sources of potential longer term or matching funding. One grant of up to $100,000 over a one-to-two-year study period, conditional upon annual review, is available for project year 2013.  Projects for lesser amounts are eligible.  Only clinical projects are eligible; basic science proposals will not be considered.

OREF/Musculoskeletal Transplant Foundation Research Grant—Applications closed

This grant provides start-up funding or seed money for a new investigator researching the science of biologic skeletal reconstruction, including implants and stem cells. Thanks to generous support from the Musculoskeletal Transplant Foundation, one grant totaling up to $100,000 for a maximum time period of two years is available, conditional upon annual review. Clinical relevance must be clearly noted in the abstract and specific aims, and be explicit in both the project title and the study design. The principal or co-principal investigator must be an orthopaedic surgeon. PhDs and DVMs are eligible if they are affiliated with an orthopaedic department. Funds may not be used for salary.  Applications for projects of a clinical or basic science nature will be accepted.

OREF Prospective Clinical Research Grant—Applications closed

This grant provides funding for a promising prospective clinical research project in an area of high clinical importance in orthopaedic surgery. Clinical relevance must be clearly noted in the abstract and specific aims, and be obvious from the title and study design. The principal or co-principal investigator must be an orthopaedic surgeon. PhDs and DVMs are eligible to apply if they are affiliated with an orthopaedic department. An orthopaedic resident or fellow may apply with documentation that he or she will be in a staff position at the time the grant commences. One $150,000 grant of $50,000 per year for three years, conditional upon annual review, is available for Project Year 2013.

ORS/OREF Travel Awards in Orthopaedic Research Translation—Applications closed 
 
ORS/OREF Travel Awards in Orthopaedic Research Translation recognize clinician scientists and clinical investigators in the early stages of their careers for playing a key or leading role in an original research project in clinical or translational medicine, demonstrating excellence in training, and showing a commitment to orthopaedic research.  Five recipients will receive free registration for and will present their work at the 2013 ORS Annual Meeting. Award recipients will be given a $500 honorarium, up to $1,000 in travel reimbursement, and two additional years of free ORS Annual Meeting registration. To be eligible, an applicant must have obtained an MD, DO, DDM, DPT, DDS or equivalent, have an active independent clinical practice, and be no more than five years past completion of a clinical residency or fellowship program. The five years of eligibility are defined from the date of completion of residency training or clinical subspecialty fellowship training. Award recipients must submit an abstract on which they are the first and presenting author for the ORS Annual Meeting.

OREF/Zimmer Young Investigator Grant in Total Joint and Trauma SurgeryApplications closed
Six grants for 2013 have been made possible through support provided by Zimmer Holdings, Inc.

This one-year grant provides up to $50,000 to advance the training of the next generation of orthopaedists who have a clinical or scientific interest in total joint surgery and/or trauma treatment.  Orthopaedic surgeons in approved orthopaedic residency and fellowship programs, or who have completed formal training within the last four years* may apply by submitting a proposal for an individual plan for further research investigation. Six grants will be given for Project Year 2013, two of which are reserved for and will be reviewed and selected by members of JRGOS and/or RJOS. Minority and female orthopaedic surgeons are encouraged to apply.

*This requirement is flexible if a sabbatical or leave of absence was taken during the candidate’s early career and will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis.

OREF Resident Clinician Scientist Training Grant—Applications closed
 
The objective of the Resident Clinician Scientist Training Grant is to prepare residents for a career with research as a major component.  Clinical relevance must be clearly noted in the abstract and specific aims sections, and be obvious from the title and study design.  Grants of up to $20,000 to cover research expenses, but not salary for one year will be considered for orthopaedic surgery residents or fellows completing an orthopaedic fellowship in accredited orthopaedic programs. Within the one-year grant period, the grantee is required to have a minimum of three months dedicated research time, with six months preferred.  The grantee’s time commitment must be consistent with the grantee's role on the project, and must be justified. The work should clearly be achievable by the grantee as a free-standing project even when it is a part of a larger work, and it should potentially lead to publication with the grantee as an author.  Both laboratory and clinical projects (e.g., outcome studies) are suitable, but in either case clinical relevance must be explicitly and clearly described.

OREF/DePuy Resident Research Project Grant—Applications closed

OREF invites submissions for grants of $5,000 each intended for orthopaedic residents who are working with a mentor to develop research interests. Clinical relevance must be clearly noted in the abstract and specific aims sections of the application, and be obvious from the title and study design. Both laboratory and clinical projects are suitable. Funding may be applied to research expenses, but not salary or travel. With support provided by DePuy, several one-year grants are available for Project Year 2013.

AAHKS/OREF Research Grant in Adult Reconstruction—Applications closed

This grant encourages new investigators by providing start-up funding for promising, clinically relevant research projects on hip or knee reconstruction. The principal or co-principal investigator must be an orthopaedic surgeon and a member of the American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons. PhDs and DVMs are eligible if they are affiliated with an orthopaedic department. Proposals should address a specific, well-defined question that aims to identify when hip or knee arthroplasty is necessary or the cost effectiveness of either procedure. Clinical relevance must be clearly noted in the abstract and specific aims, and be obvious from the title and study design. Funds may not be used for salary. Applications for projects of a clinical or basic science nature will be accepted. One grant of $40,000 for one year is available for Project Year 2013.

RJOS/OREF/DePuy Research Grant in Women’s Musculoskeletal Health—Applications closed

With support from DePuy Orthopaedics, this Award will help train and develop female orthopaedic surgeons to improve knowledge in the area of women’s musculoskeletal health, and enhance the understanding of gender and diversity differences in the outcomes of orthopaedic procedures. The candidate must be a female orthopaedic surgeon who is a member of the Ruth Jackson Orthopaedic Society. One grant of $25,000 for one year is available for Project Year 2013.

POSNA/OREF Research Grant in Pediatric Orthopaedics—Applications closed

OREF and the Pediatric Orthopaedic Society of North America (POSNA) invite researchers to apply for the POSNA/OREF Research Grant in Pediatric Orthopaedics as part of a grant sharing program. Qualifying areas of investigation include clinical and basic science research, as well as multicenter or POSNA-wide projects. Clinical relevance must be clearly noted in the abstract and specific aims, and be obvious from the title and the study design. The principal or co-principal investigator must be a member in good standing of POSNA, working at an institution in the U.S. or Canada. PhDs are eligible to apply if affiliated with an orthopaedic department and working with an orthopaedic surgeon/POSNA member who is the co-principal investigator. One grant of up to a total of $80,000 ($40,000 per year for up to two years), conditional upon annual review, is available for Project Year 2012. Proposal budgets should be detailed with this in mind. Recipient selection will be based on the proposal’s scientific quality, alignment with the mission of POSNA, and potential to establish new areas of research which can attract additional funding and contribute to investigator career development. The grantee will be invited to the OREF grant-writing workshop.
