Orthopaedic fellowship programs offered by academic institutions or group practices in the United States are invited to apply for OREF graduate medical education (GME) fellowship grants.
Programs accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) are automatically eligible. Non-ACGME-accredited programs that demonstrate they reflect quality standards equivalent to ACGME-accredited programs as specified in the application are also eligible.

Grants of up to $75,000 will be offered to support 2013-2014 fellowships in these practice categories:
- adult reconstruction
- foot and ankle care
- hand care
- orthopaedic oncology
- orthopaedic trauma
- shoulder and elbow care
- spine care
- sports medicine
The number of recipients and amount of each grant depend on available funding for each practice area. If OREF has received sufficient funding to award grants to all eligible applicants in a given category, it does so. For any practice area with more applicants than available funding, the OREF Educational Grants Committee selects grant recipients through a donor-blind, non-biased process reviewed by monitors appointed by the U.S. Department of Justice for several device manufacturers.
