Orthopaedic fellowship programs offered by academic institutions or group practices in the United States are invited to apply for OREF graduate medical education (GME) fellowship grants. Programs that meet Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) criteria are automatically eligible. Non-ACGME-accredited programs that demonstrate they reflect quality standards equivalent to ACGME-accredited programs as specified in the application are also eligible. The number of recipients and amount of each grant depend on available funding for each practice area. If OREF has received sufficient funding to award grants to all eligible applicants in a given category, it does so. For any practice area with more applicants than available funding, the OREF Educational Grants Board selects grant recipients through a donor-blind, non-biased process approved by monitors appointed by the U.S. Department of Justice for several device manufacturers.
